Annual Report of Adishakti’s Work from April 2006 to March 2007 

 

Cultural Programs: 
Adishakti’s main preoccupation in 2006 was the creation of its new theatre production The Hare & The Tortoise. The piece was ready by January 2007.

In the month of March 2006 Becket Scholar and Director Sarajane Scaife from Ireland held a Becket Workshop at Adishakti, which was attended by mid career actors and other experts from South Asia. It resulted in the creation of five Becket plays which were performed by these actors at the Sir Ratan Tata Koothu Kovil on the 17th March for the public. The visiting actors were housed at Adishakti.
 
George Allopaty a shadow puppeteer from Spain stayed at Adishakti to interact with residential traditional Tamil shadow puppeteer L Rajappa.
 
A new artist, Arjun Shankar, joined Adishakti in the new financial year. 
 
In April Sumith Nakandala, Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Chennai, stayed at Adishakti over a weekend.
 
In early May, Writer and Director Prabal Kumar from Mumbai brought his play Binodini Devi to Adishakti. It was performed at the Sir Ratan Tata Koothu Kovil on 7th May by Uday Chandra and Kumkum Mazumdar.  

In May 2006 Adishakti traveled to Bonn to perform a production from their repertoire---Brhannala. This play featured in the Bonn Biennale 2006. And received a very enthusiastic response. 
 
In June Adishakti hosted fifty students from JB Petit School from Mumbai and offered them a workshop.
 
In June Adishakti hosted the following experts from Australia who stayed at Adishakti to work on various projects:
 

Ammanda Macdonald an academic who was at Adishakti to extend her reflections upon the relation between the comic and the caricatural in facial representations of emotions. And, for that matter, witnessing Adishakti’s work further informed her in the calligraphy of the body. 

Dr. Bronte Adams (BA Phd (Oxon)) visited Adishakti for a 3 week residence to research the influence of culture on cross-cultural interpretations of Shakespeare.  She also worked with Adishakti personnel to explore potential cultural initiatives between India and Australia. 

Claire Murray visited Adishakti for a 2 week residence to work on a pan Asian project reviewing the use of traditional building & construction techniques in contemporary architecture. 
In the same month Adishakti gave a workshop cum picnic to thirty students from Deepanam a village school in Auroville for physically challenged children.
 
Adishakti hosted three theatre persons, Imogene an actor from the UK, Srimoyee actor from Kolkotta and Ana a Ph. d student from Paris, France, in July for five days. These actors wanted to observe and be informed by Adishakti’s theatre work processes.
 
Also in July, Humming Bird Films a TV Company documented Adishakti and its work for TV spectators in Singapore.
 
In August Adishakti invited percussionist Ishwaran Unni from the Kerala Kalamandalam for a period of four days to give a refresher course to the Adishakti team, so as to prepare them for their performance of Ganapati in Frankfurt at the end of September.
 
Adishakti also hosted three architects from Bangalore, who were interested in viewing the use of ‘vernacular’ construction technologies on the campus.
 
A French play Les Histories Dun Grain De’ Sel Directed by Claude Jocteur Monrozier and performed by Bharavi Mahadeviya was performed at the Sir Ratan Tata Koothu Kovil, at Adishakti on the 20.8.2006. As a double bill Adishakti performed some moments of its work in progress The Hare & The Tortoise.
 
1-9-2006 to 30-9-2006 the city of Munich, Germany, offered a residency program to the Adishakti team to create a performance piece titled Impressions of Munich. The Adishakti team stayed at the international residency house called Villa Walberta for this and at the end of one month they performed the new work at the Gaistag cultural complex at Munich.
 
Adishakti did two performance of its production Ganapati for the Frankfurt book fair in early October 2006.
 
On return from Germany Adishakti resumed work in early October on its new play The Hare and The Tortoise, which then premiered at Bharat Niwas Auditorium Auroville on the 13th January, 2007 and went on to perform for the Bharat Rang Mahaotsav, the NSD Festival on the 18th January 2007,{ 2 performances} in Delhi; and in Kolkatta on the 20th January 2007. The Hare and Tortoise was performed at Adishakti in early March 2007. Five performances totally. 
 
In mid October Adishakti held a ten day puppetry performance by L Rajappa at its campus.
 
From 15-10-2006 to 30-10-2006- there was the 15 day annual martial arts massage for the Adishakti team at Adishakti. 
 
On the 12th November  Adishakti hosted a performance by the Signum String Quartet from Germany, who played Mozart at the Sir Ratan Tata Koothu Kovil. This was courtesy the Goethe Institute, German Consulate, Lufthansa and The Hindu. The performance was a huge success and highlighted the versatility and competence of the theatre space. It awoke interest in various performing quarters as an excellent venue for performance. 
 
As a consequence Adishakti hosted Ladislav Brosman from former Czechoslovakia, who gave a solo concert on the violin on the 3rd of December. 
 
From 27th November Adishakti hosted two persons on an ASIA LINK Fellowship from Australia for a two month period. One of them Tim Dragaville was a musician and the other Rosalie Hastwell an Arts Manager. 
 
20-12-2006 –A half hour music piece created by Tim Dagerville with Adishakti was performed at the SRT Koothu Kovil, Adishakti.
 
Rosalie Dagerville created a program for the village children coming from the surrounding villages, at Adishakti, which will be carried forward by Adishakti in the future.
 
14-1-2007- Performance by Isai Mayyam Trust Pondicherry for the children of neighboring villages at Sir Rattan Tata Koothu Kovil in Adishakti 
 
In February, 2007 Artistic Director of Adishakti--Veenapani went to speak at the Berkshire Conference, USA on ‘Art in the growing new economies of India and China.’ 
 
Adishakti again hosted the team of Mid Summer Nights Dream and British Director Tim Supple for a month during their rehearsals of the play.
 
In late February and early March the Adishakti team led workshops at Heggedo on Breath in Performance Practice, for the performers of Ninasaam. 
 
1-2-2007 – Performance by Darb al harir. A music concert featuring artist from Rajastan, Spain, Algeria, Kerala ,Gujarat at the Sir Ratan Tata Koothu Kovil in Adishakti
 
18-2-2007-Cie tour de cirque - a circus program by circus and mime artist from France
 
In mid March Adishakti hosted and participated in an SRTT supported Translation Workshop. The Workshop was attended by stalwarts like Girish Karnard, Na Muthuswamy, Prof Ramanujam, Lakshmi Holstrom, Sadanand Menon , Vasanthi Shankaranarayan, Shantha Ghohkale Ashok Bhalla etc

In March Veenapani was invited to the University of Leeds to speak at an International Seminar to present Adishakti’s performance methodologies.


       Infra Structure:


 
In 2006-2007 Adishakti installed solar panels for the Guest House Bathrooms.
 
In the same year Adishakti bought some Lights and a Dimmer board for equipping its Theatre.
 
It has also installed a 62 KVA generator for the running of its Theatre.
 
It has bought equipment for the Theatre which includes such items as a rolling ladder for putting up lights.
 
Adishakti bought twenty cents of land on its southern and eastern boundaries to save its trees from being cut by developers.
