 Adishakti’s Theatre Performances 2004-2005

Adishakti's main work is concerned with the creation of a new aesthetic in a postcolonial and globalized world. This implies an engagement both with form and content. The formal work involves the creation of a new language of expression resulting from a research into old traditional forms; and the creation of new texts involves the focusing on contemporary resonances within local but shared myths from the tradition.

Such work requires serious research and investigation and dialogues across cultures, regions and disciplines and results in knowledge creation. It is through its performances that Adishakti disseminates such knowledge.

These performances are almost in all cases followed by explanatory demonstrations, discussions and workshops with audiences seeking to know more.

Other Groups at Adishakti , Sir Ratan Tata Koothu Kovil

Adishakti is also cultivating an audience from the community around its own campus. This community consists of the villagers from Edyanchavadi and Moratandi, the international community from Auroville and the urban dwellers from Pondicherry. These audiences are never segregated but learn to observe performances in a spirit of total egalitarianism.

And apart from its own work Adishakti also showcases work by performers from different regions and different forms so as to expose the neighboring community to a variety of artistic forms.

Adishakti's objective in doing this is to combat the malaise of utilitarianism afflicting our world, at least on its {Adishakti's} home ground, by educating its audiences to find value in art. Also the variety of performances made available to this audience would allow it to develop eclectic tastes and thereby encourage tolerance in all areas of life.
